31 Days of The Paranormal Presents: J. Cameron McClain @jcameronmcclain Author of The Five Watchers Trilogy

What made you write a paranormal themed book? Where did the idea come from?

First of all Nicole, thanks for giving me some space on your blog today!

Okay, questions. As to the paranormal, I have a speculative fiction bent, so whatever I write, there’s a fairly good chance that there’s going to be SF, fantasy, horror, or other such deviance in there. In this case, the plot had to be a horror paranormal fantasy, because those genres—and a book and a movie—are exactly where the inspiration came from.

Back in 2010 when I was finishing up my undergrad degree in English, I asked a professor to work with me on a directed study course that focused on apocalyptic literature. After running through a large number of possible works, we settled on a number of apocalyptic novels, one of which was I Am Legend.

(And just because I want to share, the other apocalyptic novels were Mary Shelley’s The Last Man, Neville Shute’s On the Beach, Samuel Youd’s No Blade of Grass, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and Revelation from the Bible. It’s surprising how few true end of the world novels are out there. Maybe because it’s not so much fun when we already know the end?)

Though Shelley’s work doesn’t have any zombies, it has plenty of plague, as does Revelation, so plagues were in the back of my mind throughout the course. While doing research on Matheson’s plague-focused work, I happened to come across an interview with George A. Romero on his Night of the Living Dead. The interview caught my attention because in it he noted that his film was inspired by I Am Legend, something I hadn’t known before. It took me some time to fully process what had been revealed to me, but soon after I graduated, I found myself going back to Romero’s comments, and then back to Matheson’s original story, with the first sparks of a story going off.

Matheson is credited for coming up with the modern concept of “viral vampires.” Until I Am Legend, vampires (e.g. Count Dracula and Varney) were perpetuated via a mysterious ebb and flow of life-energy via a vampire’s bite and the drawing out of blood (and life essence, as well as the soul), or of the victim drinking the vampire’s blood. Matheson’s explanation of a pandemic is incomplete in the sense that he never clarifies what causes the pandemic, but in attributing a biological agent to the mix, he influenced our view of vampires—in a sense bringing them closer to human.

Arguably, however, Matheson’s contribution to modern horror—in the form of viral zombies—has had an even greater reach. Romero’s premise of the dead becoming reanimated, and the bite from the undead carrier creating another zombie has permeated media for decades.

After I read Matheson’s novel (once again, and after a few guilty viewings of The Omega Man as well), I finally recognized the commonality of what I was being told by Matheson and Romero. The simple version: In essence, zombies are vampires.

I Am Legend explains that there are two types of vampire: those who contracted the disease, then died, then became reanimated, and those who were permeated by the biological agent after they were dead and who were reanimated. Romero dumped the intelligent undead, deciding to focus on the siege story element (as he did even more successfully with the sequel Dawn of the Living Dead), but regardless, the origin to those mindless undead lies with the vampire race, courtesy I Am Legend.

Once I recognized the common ground between the two creatures, I began to think about how I would approach the virus itself in my story. Because the story happens at the time the plague starts, I have created my own version of events to the patient zero scenario, linking them with vampires.

I also thought quite a bit about the dynamics between the three groups. In a zombie outbreak, what would the effects be on vampires? There are some interesting discussions on the subject (including this article from Southern Fried Science http://www.southernfriedscience.com/?p=2528), that I think sums up the problems facing vampires in such a scenario—the same thing that faces any predator when their food supply is about to disappear. Having the vampires decide to ally with the humans in order to save them is only the start of things.

So there you go. That is why I decided to write a novel in the Paranormal genre, and where the ideas are coming from. I’m hoping to be through with my second round of edits within the next few months, and launch Alliance within half a year. If the premise sounds intriguing, I hope you’ll keep the story in mind, and have a read when I publish it. In the meantime, Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend is in print, and if you haven’t read it yet, I recommend you do so. It’s a bigger story than you might think.

31 Days of The Paranormal Presents: Declaration: Book 3 of The Pagan Eyes Series by Rayna Noire @RaynaNoire

Declaration: Book 3 of The Pagan Eyes Series

BLURB

Declaration is book three in the Pagan Eyes series, but also can be read as a stand alone book.

Ethan finds himself trapped between the world he knows and the world that could be. A sadistic bully, an unsympathetic principal, and an unreachable love interest make high school difficult for Ethan. He feels like he’s living a lie, trying to blend in at school in an effort to keep his head attached to his body.

Fear that he’s not the son his father wants negates the support his Wiccan family offers. An impromptu trip into the future saves him from an enraged bully while instilling doubts about where he really belongs. Somehow, he has to find a way to survive in his own world tossing aside his mask and doubts.

Early Comments

Declaration Excerpt

Ethan hid in a dark doorway, panting, while he considered his options. No way Caulb and his felons in training would give up once they figured out he outsmarted them. Shouts echoing in the cavernous hallway alerted him. Danger was closer than he’d thought. Great. Weren’t schools supposed to be crawling with staff members looking out for the welfare of the students? Yeah, right. Too bad, he’d left his cell phone in Leah’s car. Not that it would have done him much good since the school used a dampener to keep students from texting in class.

If high schools were a theme park, then tenth grade was the roller coaster. It started uneventfully. The most stressful part had been fending off all the helpful staff members, who wanted to redirect him to the middle school, assuming, since he was shorter than a good portion of the girls, he wasn’t old enough for high school.

The voices veered off to the left, down the science corridor. A window of opportunity opened up. Ethan shot up the hallway to the gym, where the wrestling team practiced earlier. His father had nagged him to try out for the wrestling team. Even the coach asked him to give it a go, because they needed someone in his weight class. Most of his matches would forfeit due to not having anyone in his class or he’d end up wrestling a girl, the coach said. No thanks. He already had enough things to be teased about.

The dimly lit hallway stretched as if it were endless. Maybe this was a dream and he’d wake up soon. Caulb’s voice filtered down the hallway. His bass timber was menacing enough without the eerie quality of it bouncing off the metal lockers and taking on an almost mechanical quality. Caulb was a deadly droid, on the mission of annihilating anyone who didn’t conform to his standards. Unfortunately, no tip sheet existed to specify what his standards were. All Ethan knew was, he didn’t meet them.

The gym doors came into view. Sanctuary. He swung the door open with a gasp, unsure what he was going to say. All he had to do was stick close to the coach. Maybe he could say he needed to use the phone to call home. His eyes darted around the empty gym. Where was everyone? An image of the wrestlers in their spandex suits came to mind. They were dressed in their team apparel when he’d seen them earlier, which meant they were probably at an away meet, and why no one was in the gym. The lights illuminated the wooden floor and abandoned mats.

He took a few steps into the gym, stopped, and turned slowly, seeing no sign of following bullies, or an almost friend who stabbed him in the back. His lips pulled down into a frown, remembering the different expectations he’d had for the night, much different.

Ever heard of Camelot? What about Avalon? Do you believe they were real? What if I told you they were?

Ever heard of Camelot? What about Avalon? Do you believe they were real? What if I told you they were? What if I told you that King Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, Morgan Le fey and the lady of the lake were nothing more than a very powerful, very dysfunctional family? At this point, you are probably imagining every version of Arthur and his famed sword you have ever seen, read or heard. You are wondering which version this one is based on. Anyone who is familiar with the various Arthur/Merlin based legends Will have their own views on who they think was good and who they think was evil. They will have their own beliefs on what they think actually happened.

To those people I say; Forget everything you think you know right now. I'm serious. Whatever you have seen, heard or read is probably way off base. The Avalon Legacies is the story of one infamously powerful family that made one devastating mistake after another. A family that fell so epically from grace with The Goddess that she cursed their entire race, cast them out of their magical home in Avalon and slammed it's gates closed to earth until the day that they are able to redeem themselves. With no one left to continue the Fey teachings and the Christian Crusades spreading across Europe, mankind's ability to wield magic on this planet slowly disappeared. The histories of a once great King, noble family and wondrously magical race were slowly reduced to nothing more than legends and fairy tales. So much so, that most of the descendants of this great family don't even know who they are or that they are supposed to be redeeming themselves and the ones who do know have either hidden it, faked their death or have been on this fruitless quest for so long that they have lost the ability to think rationally.

The Avalon Legacies is not your everyday tale of good and evil. There is no straight black and white but instead, an everlasting gray area. Those you think are evil, may not be. Those you think are good, may not be and those who started off good may change due to their experience and vice versa. There are five legacies. Each one follows this family as they are tasked with each step toward redemption. With every step forward, they see only more steps. Behind every door, there always seems to be another and don't think that this path to redemption only leads back to Arthur and his family. Each legacy goes deeper and deeper into the past. Every creation was the direct result of something that happened to the creator. ( God or Goddess)  Whatever creator that may be.

The events that lead up to earth's first and forgotten Apocalypse, were set into motion long before God ever created earth. This family discovers that not only are they tasked with fixing the mistakes of their forefathers that lead to the death of magic on this planet but that some of those mistakes may have been manipulated by other creators. They discover that the creation of their race was directly related to a many century old feud between two of what the family finds out are many, many, many creators. The secrets that this family unearths during their quest will one day re write all that ever was and all that ever will be. If they can survive standing up to even the most stubborn and pigheaded creators in existence. That is.

31 Days of The Paranormal presents: The Pagans Eyes Series book 1: Initiation by Rayna Noire

Name:
Rayna Noire

Louisville, KY

Series:
Pagan Eyes

Genre:
YA with touches of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.

Writing Style:
Talk it to death, write, research, think about it, write some more, decide I should have planned it out, but power through it anyhow.

What made you decide to write this series?
I wrote Pagan Eyes Series for Pagan teens & adults or those open to alternative faiths. Too often, witches or Pagans get shabby treatment in stories. They’re usually the villain. I thought it would be nice to have some positive models and Pagan-friendly books too. When I started writing the series, a close friend also suggested lesbian witch romances as another niche market. I’m considering it.

Do you have an editor, cover artist…
I have a wonderful cover artist in Dawne Dominque. I also have wonderful editor who knows my tendencies to overuse certain words. Thank you Larriane. Most recently, I’ve obtain proofing services from Magic Wand Editing.

Favorite Author
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro because she respected the legend of the vampire in crafting her novels. None of this I want it this way; therefore, I’ll ignore everything that went before. A good author and storyteller can write around obstacles. She writes horror, fantasy and suspense. No surprise, she’s up for World Fantasy Life Achievement Award this year.

Writing Challenges
Time is my major one. I have two different pen names, which keeps me busy. Then there is that issue with life happening at inconvenient times.

Do you create your characters or do they create themselves?
I sketch out the major bits, but traits pop up I never planned. Several secondary characters stroll into the story and make a place for themselves. I’ve rewritten an entire story to include a demanding character who was only supposed to be a walk on.

Is writing a full time job?
Writing could be a full time job, but currently I’m still working in the outside world to afford the conferences, workshops, swag, and all the books I give away.

If you could go back in time and meet one famous person...
I would be interested more in going back in time to when people first started organizing communities. I’d be more curious to see what society was like when they worshipped a goddess deity and lineage came through the mother as opposed to the father. We can only speculate right now.

As far as famous people, I’ve always been interested in George Sands.

What makes your book different than YA books already out there?
Number one, the family has issues, but they stick together as a unit. Most YA books flip flop between parents who never wonder where their children go in the middle of the night to very restrictive parents. There’s a lot of variety in the characters from the aloof Nora to the social butterfly Ethan. Besides being positive Pagan, each story combines several elements as opposed to a genre-specific story.

As an Indie author, what marketing works best for you?
Other authors are my helpers from blog hops to telling me what conference to attend. I appreciate the help bloggers and even fans give me. Apparently, they know more what is going on than I do.

Come meet the Carpenter family. They're my neighbors . Maybe they're not your average neighbors, but they keep their grass cut, their house fixed up and the noise down. Sure there may be a car parked in the driveway with a Friend of the Fae bumpersticker. Not as bad as some of the bumperstickers, I've seen. Nana might be a little more colorful than most grandmother's with her broomstick skirts and jangling bracelets. She's the one you don't want to cross. The rest of the family is soft spoken and well mannered. They do have a tendency to disappear for days, then reappear again with explanation that they were sick.
Can't say that one always fly. Now and then, a whole bunch of people visit at once bringing hot dishes. Must have been someone's birthday. I would love to get into that house and find out what's going on, but I can't. I haven't been invited. You can though with the first book, Initiation, which tells the Leah's, the youngest daughter's story,

EXCERPT

The smell struck her first. The acrid, smelly odor reminded her of her fourth-grade field trip to a pioneer village. The candle maker had intrigued her by dipping wicks in what she had assumed was wax until the woman explained it was made of animal fat from butchered animals. That’s what it smelled like, along with the campfire aroma of burning wood. In the misty night sky, a clouded crescent moon shed meager light on the surroundings. Turning slowly she examined the primitive thatched hut behind her.

In the small front garden, a split log supported by two stumps served as a bench. An oaken bucket sat by a door that flew open. An elderly woman hobbled out, dressed in a black cloak. The woman reminded Leah of her grandmother, but instead of a look of fierce determination, terror pulled her face into an anxious mask. Reaching Leah, she tugged on her clothes, pushing her toward the woods.

“Flee, flee, they come. Smell the torches.” The woman pointed to a path winding toward the east. A dim glow was coming from thatdirection, along with the sounds of voices and snapping branches as dozens of feet marched in their direction. An overwhelming desire to run after the unknown woman came over her. Another part of her wanted to see who was coming down the path. It was only a dream, right?

People couldn’t be hurt in a dream, or could they? She struggled to remember what her psychology teacher, Mr. Schaeffer, had said. He’d said either people couldn’t be hurt by their fears or your fears could kill you by bringing on cardiac arrest. A few men came into view, burly men garbed in shapeless garments, with wild hair and ragged beards. Held high the flickering torches illuminated a small circle around them. One held a curved knife, reminiscent of the scythe the Grim Reaper carried. It didn’t bode well. One of the men spotted her, yelled, “Witch!” and charged her way. It was a definite bad sign, causing her to sprint toward the woods in the same direction as the old woman. Sticks, rocks, and briars pierced her feet, reminding her of her shoeless state. At home, she excelled in cross-country, but she had shoes, sunlight, and a feel for the course with no angry villagers behind her. The running men drew closer. Leah stumbled over a tree root, wasting precious time.

“Here, over here.” The voice came from overhead. Staring up into the canopy of leaves, she saw a small hand motioning to her. Of course, hide in the trees. Why didn’t she think of that? Grabbing the lowest limb, she pulled herself into the leafy covering. In the dark, she felt for the branches, climbing higher. Eventually she grabbed an ankle or calf, and received a hand up for her trouble, helping her climb higher.

Good Goddess, how many people were in this tree? She held her breath as the light and noise came closer. The few men below argued about which way to go, while a woman waded in with her opinion. “Samuel, let the witch get away. Mayhap he uses the witch for his own purposes.”One of the front-runners denied the accusations. “Martha seeks to harm my name, because I did not plight my troth with her.”

The argument moved on a little farther away from the tree. Leah exhaled in a whoosh, thanking the stars for the scorned woman and lack of dogs. As if hearing her silent prayer, a long canine bay rent the air.

“Can I buy you a drink?”
     “No, thank you.”
Killian was fascinated by the scene playing out across the bar. He’d had one eye glued on the tiny blonde since she walked through the door. If there was one detail he could point to in order to explain his captivation, it was that she didn’t fit in. Thank God. Her innocence was almost tangible when set next to the other occupants of the hardcore gothic club.
“How about I just sit with you, then?”
     “No, thank you.”
Killian leaned forward in his seat, even going as far as to set his elbow on the bar and cup his chin—openly staring. Not only was she not giving the guy the time of day, she hadn’t as much as glanced in his direction to see if she might be interested. On the other hand, the dude couldn’t seem to look away from her. That made two of them. Killian was engrossed.
“Are you sure? You’re going to need someone to walk you out. This is kind of a rough joint.” It was. Killian would know.
“I’m sure. Have a nice night.”
He really wanted her to look. The guy was hot, possibly the best of the lot. She had at least three women staring at her with open malice simply because the guy was talking to her. Showing a determination that impressed Killian, the dude braced one hand on the wooden surface beside him and one on the back of her chair, boxing the woman in. The invasion of her personal space forced her to acknowledge his presence. As if it were possible, Killian stared even harder. He was almost afraid to blink in case he missed her reaction to seeing who she’d been ignoring. She turned her head, meeting the man’s gaze. Not a single ounce of emotion marred her features as she eyed the guy’s blond hair, dark eyes, and muscles flexing on her behalf. The dude smiled. It was slow and obviously practiced. A dimple appeared at the corner of his mouth and straight white teeth gleamed even in the darkly lit club.
     “I’m married.”
     Killian chuckled. “Liar.”
She turned in his direction, meeting his gaze as if she’d heard him. Light-green eyes flashed wickedly. Her mouth turned up in one corner, as if competing with her gaze for top mischief-maker. Goddamn. No wonder the dude wouldn’t leave her be.
“So what?” The boy-toy’s response pulled her focus back his way. Killian caught himself lifting up in his chair as if he meant to physically reclaim her attention.
“There are two women sitting behind me who’d love what you’re offering. Enough to share,” she tacked on in an obvious attempt to sweeten the deal. Killian glanced behind her. Yep. There were. The dude didn’t look, but he did straighten away.
“They’re a sad substitute for you.”
A hint of a smile touched her lips. “But a substitute nonetheless. Have fun.” If she’d meant her dismissal to lure the man in further, making him want her more, then she’d succeeded. It was written all over the guy’s face. However, he did give in.
     “If you change your mind…”
“I know where you’ll be.” She didn’t bother softening the blow with another smile. Killian was on his feet, pushing his way through the crowd and intent on reaching her before the dust settled in Mr. Studly’s tracks. He saw her chin tilt in the direction of where he’d been sitting, but he couldn’t see her face. He almost changed his mind. In the end, his greed won out, as always.
Killian didn’t give her time to deny him the way she had the other guy. Instead, he braced his hands against the edge of the bar on either side of her, caging her in. With her pinned in place, he nodded at the bartender to bring her another drink. She didn’t tense or turn her head as he crowded her body, inhaling her sweet scent and speaking against her ear.
“You should’ve taken his offer. It wasn’t a bad deal.”

Lucius’ hubris is now a curse, and he cannot rest until they carry out the last of The Almighty’s orders...and stop a war that has been millennia in the making.

Persephone Roberts is always in the right place at the right time, the serendipity allowing her to help people on her travels. When it leads her to cross paths with the band of hard-living fallen angels, she sets her sights on their leader, and is determined to restore Lucius’ faith in their quest. And in himself.

But the ancient evil the angels strive to fight has put Persephone in its crosshairs. It will be up to Lucius and his brothers to save her and destroy the minions of the dark. Can the amber-eyed beauty with her accepting heart heal wounds that cut soul deep, and force him to reclaim a glory he once tossed aside? Is he strong enough to realize the path back to Heaven begins with her, or will he be forever...fallen?
